ESL GRAMMARNOUNS: Count and Non-count

They can be confusing!

The rules below are true for the vast majority of nouns; however, there are exceptions!   In some cases, you just have to memorize the correct noun.
Nouns without an "s" are non-count.

  • Examples:
water, beer, wine, money, cheese, oil, gas.

Nouns with an "s" are count.

  • Examples:
cars, books, dollars, pesos, reais, cups of water, cans of beer

Remember:

  • How many = count
  • How many dollars do you have?

  • How much = non-count
  • How much money do you have?
