Seldom is there a problem using this verb; however, the problem is with the words you need to describe the feeling after you are hurt.  
PAIN - ACHE - SORE

EXAMPLES: 

hurt = pain + ache + sore

  1. I hurt my knee.  My knee hurts.

  2. She hit her head.  Her head hurts.

  3. Bill hurt his back playing football. His back is sore.   (L)

  4. If you feel pain after hurting yourself, you may need to see a Physician.  

  5. I hurt my right hand playing handball and now it is aching a lot.

  6. I hurt my right hand playing handball and now it is hurting a lot.

  7. I hurt my right hand playing handball and now it is very sore.

  8. The bus accident hurt a lot of people.

  9. The teacher hurt my feelings when he said my English was not very good.

  10. Life is better when you don't hurt others.
